Preconference Workshops

Workshop 1: Health and Organizations

We are excited to host “Health and Organizations,” a preconference dedicated to examining the intersection of organizational communication and health, especially as they pertain to complexities in designing, organizing, and coordinating for health and wellness. Examples of cross-cutting themes to be considered include:

  • Health services and delivery systems
  • Community health and wellness programs
  • Communicating health in the new media landscape
  • Healthy work environments
  • Risky, toxic, and high reliability careers and workplaces
  • Innovating health practices and the social responsibilities of Health Organizations
  • Health and wellness surveillance by organizations
  • Health information systems, data analytics, and knowledge processes
  • Platform based health enterprises and the consequences of personalized of health services
  • Population health and wellness and the role of cross sector stakeholder networks
  • Institutions, Infrastructures, Innovation and Inequalities
  • Inter-organizational coordination and collaboration in health systems
  • High risk health, health crises, and slow burning health crises
  • Public affairs and policy with respect to public health and wellness

The half day preconference will include organizational communication and health sciences panelists who will give brief presentations about their current research, discuss the complementarities among research projects in an interactive plenary session, and engage in focused breakout discussion groups to directly engage audience members in formulating research directions and in identifying potential interdisciplinary projects for advancing health and wellness practices at multiple levels of society. The preconference will also be of interest to those researchers who may not currently conduct health-related research but who are interested in how their expertise and research could connect with this important societal arena at the intersection of health and organizations.

Workshop 2: Organizational Communication Masters Pre-Con

Are you a masters student thinking about going on for your Ph.D.?  If you are thinking about pursuing the doctoral degree but have more questions than answers this pre-con is for you!  In this four-hour session, attendees will be led through a set of useful topics to help you make a decision:

  • Considerations in the decision to pursue a Ph.D.
  • Process of locating a good fit in a Ph.D. program
  • Realistic preview of doing doctoral-level coursework, research, and dissertation
  • Possible career paths post-doctoral degree
  • Developing a plan of action

This interactive session will give you opportunities to hear from current doctoral students, PhD program alums, and newly minted faculty from various institutions about their career journeys; participate in activities and exercises to move you closer to a decision and plan for moving forward; and engage in discussion about various options for doctoral education and related careers.
